Autobiographical notes and journal account of Hayden's life from 1813 to 1864; descriptions of voyages to Tahiti, Pitcairn Island, Manila, China, the Celebes, and Taiwan, usually from the port of New York; and writings relating to whaling, an expedition into the St. Lawrence country, organization of the New York Submarine Engineering Company, Burnside Expedition, battles of Roanoke Island (1862) and South Mills (1862), and various types of military marine engineering operations. Includes seaman's journal (1840-1843) kept by Hayden detailing events of voyages from Boston and New York to Manila and China on the ships Eben Preble with captain Franklin Hallet and the Coromando with Lyman Hunt, master.
